Top 5’s: My Top 5 Most Wanted RPG’s of 2008

With 2008 looming on the horizon like a big year shaped thing, it’s time for me to look to the year ahead and what titles due out in 2008 I’m most looking forward too. Of course with quite a few titles release dates still speculative some of the titles im excited about may appear next year or may not so I’m only going for titles with definate release dates.

5) Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic: Elements

Dark Messiah was never a game that rocked the PC’s world upon it’s release however a revamped 360 version is on the way for early 2008 with more content, more action and presumably the same hilariously violent phyics engine that led to many unique ways of killing your opponents. Granted the game will be quite ugly running of Valve’s original Source Engine, but the fun of kicking an enemy into a pit of spikes while fending off others with a sword shall hopefully redeem this. I enjoyed what I played of the original and shall hopefully enjoy this throughout.

4) Sacred II: Fallen Angel

I never actually played the original Sacred, dismissing it as a Diablo clone as I’m sure many others did. However the sequel has been in development for some time now and has been causing quite a stir amongst those lucky enough to have played it. Promising slick combat, a lengthy quest, the now obligatory morale decisions and some demon girl with massive swords (yes folks I bought Bloodrayne based purely on the game cover *sobs*) this looks like it could be the action-RPG to hone off the wait to Diablo III.

3) Fallout III

Assuming no minor disasters strike the development of Bethseda’s latest the third installment in one of the most popular RPG franchises of all time also arrives this year. The Oblivion developer seems to be keeping tight lipped about whats going on in this game, but hey it’s Fallout, whats not there to be excited about as we get set to enter the apocalyptic world for another time.

2) Fable II

I never actually thought the original Fable was that good. Fun, but not amazing. It did however have heaps of potential and hopefully Fable 2 will deliver everything the original promised and more when it arrives late in 2008. The sheer scale of what Lionhead are putting into this game is breathtaking and if it delivers just half of what it promises it will be a masterpiece.

1) Lost Odyssey

I wasn’t impressed with Blue Dragon, indeed it was mediocre at best. Mystwalker’s second effort is in the works however and due to arrive in Febuary. Boasting a more mature storyline, epic combat and the fact your character is immortal, the game looks set to hopefully deliver where Blue Dragon didn’t. Will this be the JRPG the 360 is crying out for? We shall just have to wait and see..
