First Post
Well, here is my obligatory “first post” to my blog all about RPG’s and me. As gooder way as any to get started is to detail my favourite RPG video games.
On the “western” gaming front I’ve always been a huge fangirl for Bioware’s titles so Knights Of The Old Republic, Jade Empire and Baldurs Gate II are some of the all time greats of RPG’s in my humble opinion. Also slightly less known but still a fantastic game in its own right Vampire – The Masquerade: Bloodlines was arguably one of the most fun and original games I’d played for a long time and it’s a shame it’s bug ridden nature meant it was something barely anybody ever played despite how fantastically awesome it was. Of course one can not mention RPG’s with at least giving a brief nod to the manic hack and slash that is Diablo II. I’m sure I’ll do some mini features on some of these titles in the future but for now I believe those are the best of the Western RPG lot.
Japanese RPG’s are something I came too somewhat late having never really “got” the whole Final Fantasy thing back in the days of the PS1. To be fair I’ve never really been a huge fan of the FF franchise and while I may cause heresey by saying this X-2 was the best of what I’ve played as it somewhat removed the mind numbing linearity of the games leading up to it. That said lots of turn based JRPG’s are fun, the Shadow Hearts franchise is something I have never played myself but after watching my girlfreind play it almost non-stop for 4 months I must say it was the most fun I have had watching someone play a video game in years. Finally I’m currently tackling Blue Dragon which I am enjoying quite a great deal in small doses and have even overcome my manic desire to avert my eyes from anything drawn by Akira Toriyama brought on by glimpses of “Dragonball” on Cartoon network. Eternal Sonata is winging it’s way to me in the post soon (assuming Royal Mail actually do their jobs and bother delivering post sometime this decade) and needless to say I am looking forward to playing it.
Finally you have the “not really an RPG but kinda an RPG in a way as it dosent really fit into any category and hey I want to write about it anyway so I’m going to include it as one” type of game. This involves games like the two latest titles in the Elder Scrolls franchise (I enjoyed Oblivion up to the point when it actually posed a vague challenge and then got bored quickly with the main story after doing all the side quests and stories), Zelda games (Phantom Hourglass also here soon! Watch this space!) and the hilariously entertaining Overlord.
Of course there are many games I’ve enjoyed Ive not mentioned here like Fable, Enchanted Arms, Disgaea, Dungeon Siege, Arx Fatalis and even the worryingly addicted Evercrack.. erm I mean Everquest.. But I can’t list all the RPG’s I’ve enjoyed and all the ones I haven’t enjoyed (I shall be subjecting myself to Two Worlds soon) so they will have to wait for another time another blogpost and some reviews and rants to come.
